Heard Island sunrise and sunset — Atlas Cove

Calculate apparent sunrise and sunset at Atlas Cove on Heard Island: -53.02311°, 73.38611°. Times use UTC and retain the full event date.

Read the event date as well as the clock. A solar day is labelled by the UTC date containing its solar noon. In the brighter months, sunrise occurs on the preceding UTC date. UTC is a display reference, not an assertion of an official local civil time zone.

Point, calculation and limits

Australian Antarctic Gazetteer record 366 supplies the Atlas Cove point and identifies coordinate precision as unknown. The coordinates are not a settlement, population centre or an average for the whole territory. Geography attribution: Commonwealth of Australia / Australian Antarctic Division, Australian Antarctic Gazetteer, CC BY 4.0; reviewed 2026-10-25.

Contifield calculates these events with Adhan JS 4.4.6, using apparent sunrise and sunset at a standard solar-centre altitude of approximately −0.833°, sea level and an unobstructed horizon, rounded to the nearest minute. The sunrise and sunset values do not use prayer-angle, Asr or high-latitude prayer estimates.

The calculation was compared at 25 dates spanning the supported 2020–2035 range against NOAA’s published Meeus-based solar calculation; differences were within 29 seconds. NOAA states that its web calculator is no longer actively supported. This comparison is a numerical reference, not an official observed timetable or a promise of observational precision.

Terrain, clouds, unusual refraction, observer height and actual visibility are not modeled. The Australian Antarctic Division describes the islands as unoccupied by humans. This page gives a fixed-point astronomical calculation and does not imply settlement coverage.

CSV preserves each full UTC instant and coordinate. ICS includes both sunrise and sunset as timed UTC events; your calendar application controls their display clock. Missing events are shown explicitly and never replaced with zero times. Imported files do not update automatically.
