Method and limits
Cockcroft and Gault (1976) estimated creatinine clearance from serum creatinine in mg/dL, age in years and body weight in kg, with a 15% reduction for women.
CrCl (mL/min) = (140 − age) × weight / (72 × Scr) × 0.85 [female]Assumptions and limits
- The result is in mL/min, not adjusted to body surface area, so it is not interchangeable with eGFR.
- It was derived before creatinine assays were standardized and overestimates clearance in many people; which body weight to use varies between guidelines.
- This page does not choose or adjust any medicine dose.
Worked example
A 60-year-old man weighing 72 kg with creatinine 1.0 mg/dL: (140 − 60) × 72 / (72 × 1.0) = 80 mL/min. For a woman with the same values, 68 mL/min.
