Method and limits
The Devine formula gives a reference weight from height; adjusted body weight adds 40% of the difference between actual and ideal weight.
Ideal body weight (kg) = 50 (men) or 45.5 (women) + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)
Adjusted body weight = IBW + 0.4 × (actual weight − IBW)Assumptions and limits
- Written for adults 5 feet (152.4 cm) and taller; below that it extrapolates.
- A reference value, not a target or healthy-weight recommendation, and this page does not calculate doses.
Worked example
A woman 175 cm tall (68.9 in): IBW = 45.5 + 2.3 × 8.9 = 66.0 kg. At an actual weight of 90 kg, adjusted body weight = 66.0 + 0.4 × 24.0 = 75.6 kg.
