Result
- Density ρ
- 0.787 g/mL
Working
- ρ = m ÷ V
- ρ = m ÷ V = 10 g ÷ 12.7 mL = 0.787 g/mL
| Unit | Value |
|---|---|
| g/mL | 0.787 |
| kg/m³ | 787 |
| g/L | 787 |
| kg/L | 0.787 |
| lb/ft³ | 49.2 |
- Density depends on temperature (water: 0.99705 g/mL at 25 °C, 0.99997 g/mL at 4 °C), so note the temperature of your measurement.
- Rounded to 3 significant figures.
Method and limits
Choose the unknown and enter the other two values in any listed unit.
ρ = m ÷ V m = ρ V V = m ÷ ρ
1 g/mL = 1 g/cm³ = 1 kg/L = 1000 kg/m³ = 1000 g/L exactly; 1 lb/ft³ = 16.018 46 kg/m³ (from the exact pound and foot).
Limits
Density depends on temperature (and, for gases, strongly on pressure): water is 0.997 05 g/mL at 25 °C and 0.999 97 g/mL at 4 °C. Report the temperature with any measured density. Answers keep the significant figures of the least precise number you enter (at least 3, at most 6).
Worked example
A liquid sample of 10.0 g fills 12.7 mL: ρ = 10.0 g ÷ 12.7 mL = 0.787 g/mL = 787 kg/m³, close to ethanol (0.789 g/mL at 20 °C).
