Method and limits
Paste a .bib file’s contents to get RIS, or an .ris export to get BibTeX. Both directions go through one neutral record, so the same field always lands in the same place.
| BibTeX | RIS |
|---|---|
| @article, @book, @incollection / @inbook, @inproceedings, @phdthesis, @techreport, @misc, @online | JOUR, BOOK, CHAP, CPAPER, THES, RPRT, GEN, ELEC |
| author, editor | AU, A2 (one line per name, “Family, Given”) |
| title, journal / booktitle, series | TI, T2, T3 |
| year, month | PY, DA (YYYY/MM//) |
| volume, number, pages | VL, IS, SP and EP |
| publisher / school / institution, address, edition | PB, CY, ET |
| isbn / issn, doi, url, abstract, keywords, note, key | SN, DO, UR, AB, KW, N1, ID |
The BibTeX reader follows Patashnik’s rules: values in braces or quotes, bare numbers, @string macros and the month macros, # concatenation and nested braces. Names are split on “and” outside braces and handled in all three BibTeX forms (“First von Last”, “von Last, First”, “von Last, Jr, First”); braced names such as {World Health Organization} stay whole. Common LaTeX accents and symbols ({\"o}, \'e, \c{c}, \ss, --) become Unicode in RIS. In the other direction, characters special to BibTeX are escaped and other Unicode is kept as UTF-8, which BibTeX 8-bit, Biber and biblatex read.
Limits
Cross-references (crossref), math in titles and custom RIS tags other than those listed are not converted; RIS has no field for BibTeX’s protective braces, so capitalisation you protected with {…} must be re-protected after a round trip. Unknown entry types become GEN or @misc, with a warning.
