Result
| Course | Credits | Grade | 4.0 points | Level | Weighted points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| English | 1 | A | 4.0 | regular | 4.0 |
| Algebra II | 1 | A | 4.0 | regular | 4.0 |
| Biology | 1 | A | 4.0 | honors | 4.5 |
| US History | 1 | B | 3.0 | AP/IB/college | 4.0 |
| Spanish | 1 | C | 2.0 | regular | 2.0 |
Method and limits
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits. With equal credits this is the plain average the College Board shows: (4.0 + 4.0 + 4.0 + 3.0 + 2.0) ÷ 5 = 3.4, which is the worked example above.
Scales used
| Letter | Points |
|---|---|
| A+ / A / A− | 4.0 (or 4.3) / 4.0 / 3.7 |
| B+ / B / B− | 3.3 / 3.0 / 2.7 |
| C+ / C / C− | 2.3 / 2.0 / 1.7 |
| D+ / D / D− | 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7 |
| F (or E) | 0.0 |
Percentages are converted only with the College Board BigFuture table: 90–100 = A (4.0), 80–89 = B (3.0), 70–79 = C (2.0), 66–69 = D (1.0), below 65 = F (0.0). That table leaves 65% itself unassigned; this tool counts it as F and warns you. Plus and minus grades are never inferred from a percentage, because schools draw those lines differently.
Weighted GPA adds a bonus to each passing grade in an honors (+0.5 by default) or AP, IB or dual-enrollment college course (+1.0 by default); change the bonuses to match your school. A cumulative GPA combines this term with an earlier GPA in proportion to credits.
Limits
Schools and colleges set their own scales, weights and rounding, and many colleges recalculate applicants’ GPAs from transcripts with their own rules. Use your school’s published scale where it differs; this is not an official GPA.
