Method and limits
CAGR is the constant yearly rate that grows the starting value into the ending value; spreadsheet RRI computes the same rate.
CAGR = (end / start)^(1 / years) − 1Assumptions and limits
- The starting value must be above zero.
- CAGR describes the start and end only, not volatility or the path between them; deposits and withdrawals in between need XIRR.
- An educational calculation, not financial, tax, legal or investment advice.
Worked example
10,000 growing to 19,500 in 5 years is a CAGR of 14.29%. Microsoft’s RRI example, 10,000 to 11,000 over 96 periods, gives 0.0993% per period.
