Return on investment (ROI) calculator

Return on investment as a percentage, net gain and, with a holding period, the annualized (compound) return.

Runs in your browser. What you enter stays on this page and is not uploaded.

Include purchase costs.
Include income received, net of selling costs.

Method and limits

ROI compares the gain with what was invested. Over more than a year, the annualized ROI is the compound yearly rate that produces the same total return.

ROI = (final value − invested) / invested
Annualized ROI = (final value / invested)^(1 / years) − 1

Assumptions and limits

  • Assumes a single investment at the start and a single value at the end; for several deposits or withdrawals use the XIRR calculator.
  • Taxes and inflation are not deducted unless you include them.
  • An educational calculation, not financial, tax, legal or investment advice.

Worked example

Investing 10,000 and ending with 14,000 is a 40% ROI. Over 3 years that is 11.87% a year, compounded.
