Method and limits
A percentage change compares the difference with the starting value. Reversing a change divides by the same multiplier rather than subtracting the percentage.
Change = (B − A) / |A| × 100%
After a change of p%: A × (1 + p/100) Before it: A / (1 + p/100)
A as a percentage of B = A / B × 100%Assumptions and limits
- A change from zero is undefined.
- A rise of p% followed by a fall of p% does not return to the start: +25% then −25% leaves 93.75%.
- For differences between two percentages, use percentage points.
Worked example
From 80 to 100 is a 25% increase; from 100 back to 80 is a 20% decrease. A price of 125 after a 25% rise was 100 before it.
